Lakes are a part of Chennai’s landscape. They perform an incredible service to the ecosystem, and are home to numerous species of flora and fauna. But today, many of these lakes have become dump yards. At the same time, incredible work is being carried out by various individuals to restore Chennai’s lakes back to life. Through Karthavyam, a few participating students were moved by depletion of lakes around their neighbourhood. They have formed their own initiative called ‘Newton’s Swamp’ to understand lake depletion, and find solutions to contribute to lake conservation. This page contains the student stories on this issue. Arun Krishnamurthy, the founder of Environmentalist Foundation of India is one of the advisors for students to learn about lakes in a deeper way.
