The problem statement which I have chosen is how to improve bad and unsafe roads. I will go to school from Bollineni hillside, Nookampalayam. On this way, the road which connects Bollineni hillside to Sithalapakkam main road is in a very bad condition.

This road is very frequently used by cars, bikes, school vans, Lorries which are used for construction which go inside the township. That’s why I chose this road as my project.

On this project, I interviewed a few People, who use this road frequently. They are: Mr. Ramesh, Mr. Aarmugam and Mrs. Anjala.

Ramesh is a 45 year old carpenter who has a shop on this road and he uses this road very frequently.

In his own words; People are facing many difficulties while crossing this road. Also during the rainy days, the road will be full of water puddles and full of mud. He said that every six months, they are laying the road but it is getting spoiled due to rains owing to the poor quality of construction. The main purpose of this road is to connect to the city via Perumbakkam. Since it is a short distance to reach the IT offices in nearby Siruseri, all the office goers and employees are using this road. He witnessed many accidents on this road. He feels that if the government constructs another link road to Semmancherry, it will be better for the people who use this road. Also the current road has to be constructed with good quality material so as to improve the situation.

Aarmugam is a 50 year old hardware shop owner where he too has a shop on this road. He said that the road is very steep, so if it rains, then all the water gets stagnant on the road.

In the rainy season there will be lot of mud so two wheelers sometimes get stuck to it, making it difficult for them to cross. He also said that the road was improper for around 20 years; before that there was no road at all to go to Perumbakkam. He too had witnessed many accidents on this road especially the two wheelers.

Anjala is a 45 year old maid who lives next to the road who uses it quite often to go to work. She says that the road is very narrow; when two vehicles pass, the road becomes congested so the pedestrians cannot walk on this road. Not only her, many of the maids stay next to the road and all have same problems while using this road. She said that during the floods, the water became inert on that road. Hence lot of pedestrians finding it difficult to use this road.

I feel that if the government takes serious action in developing this road by widening this road and then laying it properly with good quality and with a footpath for the pedestrians to walk comfortably; it will be extremely useful for the community and we can prevent many accidents!
